Nepal and Gorakhani Welfare Society

Nepal a small country between two great nations of China and India; is 885 km in length and 241 km in its maximum width, and in that short distance it rises from the 61 meters from the sea level to almost the 8,848m of the Everest, the highest mountain of the World. Nepal is a mountains landlocked country with a total land area of 147 181 square km in 3 main ecological Zones:

  • Mountains
  • Hills
  • Terrai

NepalIt has a population of 25.5 million, of which 55% in the Hills which occupy 42% of the land area. Nepal is one of the Least Developed countries (LDCs) in the world. In term of human development, Nepal is 143 rd out of 175 countries with a Human Development Index of 0.499 the lowest in Asia. Nepal is amongst the five poorest countries of the World, its 49% of the population living below the poverty line with average annual income of $ 260 according to the World Bank report 2005. Poverty is largely a rural phenomenon and the largest concentration of rural poor is in the Hills, comprising households with either no land or tiny plots of non-irrigated land on the hill sides. Most part of the country is road less so major % of the population is far from the central market and facilities.

NepalSince 1996 Nepal Government has had to contend with the Maoist insurgency, which began in the hill districts of western Nepal. Many of the hill districts have been most affected by the recent conflicts, the Banks and government agencies have withdrawn from many rural areas, which local election have not been held, livelihood, income and household food security in the hills, fragile at the best of the times, have further eroded as a result of the conflict.

However, despite this unfavorable situation NGOs have played a major role in community/regional development and education sector of the rural areas of Nepal, especially those employing local people, are still implementing development activities even in continued conflict areas. But most of the NGOs are centralized in major cities like Kathmandu , the capital of Nepal and the service providing activities are low profile or in zero level.

Gorakhani welfare Society is one of the NGOs who directly work in the rural areas of Nepal making active presence of local peoples of the area.
